Anime in Yamanashi

The municipal Mukawa school, at the foot of the Southern Alps, is the model for the high school Koguma, Reiko and Shii attend. It is a real, working school, not visitable inside.

A historic lodge and farm on the Kiyosato highland (Hokuto), founded in 1938, with views of Mt. Yatsugatake and a famous soft-serve milk ice cream. Its meadow-and-forest setting appears in the series' shots.

A former post town on the old Kōshū Kaidō in Hokuto, with traditional houses and century-old shops such as the Kinseiken confectionery and the Shichiken sake brewery. Its historic street appears in the series (coordinate at Kinseiken).

Nirasaki Station, in the neighboring city Koguma rides down to on her Cub from Hokuto. A recognizable point on her trips through the Kamanashi valley.

Hokuto City Hall holds the certification plate and commemorative stamp for "Super Cub" within the official "88 Anime Pilgrimage Spots of Japan" programme. A pilgrimage point, not a scene from the work.

Where it all begins: here Rin camps in the first episode and Nadeshiko wakes up to Mount Fuji at dusk. A lakeside campsite on the northern shore of Lake Motosu, with the view of Fuji featured on the 1,000-yen bill. After the series it became one of the most sought-after campsites in Japan.

Viewpoint above the northwest shore of Lake Motosu, reached by a trail from Kōan Campsite. From here Koyo Okada took the photograph of Fuji reflected in the lake that illustrates the 1,000-yen bill — a framing the series reproduces with devotion. About a 30-40 minute climb.

Station on the JR Minobu Line in the series' home town: Laid-Back Camp is set around Minobu and the author lived here. In front of the station, the Eishōdō confectionery sells the Minobu manjū Rin buys in the series — now with a queue of pilgrims. The whole town is decorated with the series.

A small mountain lake hidden at 850 m altitude, with no phone signal and surrounded by forest, where Rin and Nadeshiko share their first camp together by the Suimei-sō campsite. One of the series' most intimate, atmospheric corners — and in reality a silent, beautiful spot reached by narrow mountain roads.

Open-air hot spring high above Yamanashi with views over the Kōfu basin and Fuji — its name roughly means 'leave me alone'. Nadeshiko and Rin bathe here after their camp at the Fuefuki fruit park; the shot of dawn over the valley from the bath matches reality exactly.
