Anime in Hiroshima

The Kure Line station where Fū arrives in town at the start of the story; it greets visitors with a 'welcome home' sign. The starting point of the walk through Takehara.

A covered shopping arcade linking the station with the historic quarter; it is the protagonists' everyday route to school and around town.

Takehara's merchant-house quarter, Hiroshima's 'Little Kyoto', with the Former Kasai Residence (1872) as one of its open buildings. Its cobbled lanes are the heart of the series' world.

The stone steps up to Saihō-ji Temple, and above them the Fumeikaku, a wooden Kiyomizu-dera-style pavilion overlooking the town and the inland sea. It is the series' most iconic image, in its opening.

Takehara's port, in the Minatomachi district, open to the Seto Inland Sea and its islands. The setting of meetings and of the friends' bond, and the departure point for ferries to the islands.

The great stone lantern of 1859, Tomonoura's symbol, presides over the harbour that inspired Miyazaki during his stay: Sōsuke's little coastal world of boats, jetties and tides.

Fukuzen-ji temple's reception hall, famed since the Edo era for 'the most beautiful view east of Korea', frames the Inland Sea islands that flood the film with blue.

The old quarter's lanes of wooden houses, forge warehouses and slopes tumbling to the sea set the scene for the film's town, where the tide rises to the doorsteps. Miyazaki drew many of his storyboards here.
